WhatsApp is bringing back the simple text update that lets you tell contacts where you are or whether you are busy. It now sits in the About section of your profile settings. The company says it made the change after hearing from users who missed the old version.
What changed
Last month, WhatsApp replaced its old text Status with a new Status feature for sharing photos, videos and GIFs. It works much like Snapchat and Instagram Stories. Plenty of users wanted the plain text version back. A WhatsApp rep said people missed having a persistent, text-only update on their profile, so the company built it into About.
How it works
- Open the About section in your profile settings.
- Pick one of the ready-made options or type your own line.
- It shows next to your name when contacts start a new chat or view Group info.
When you get it
WhatsApp says all Android users will get it over the next week. Some people testing the latest Android beta version, an early test build, already reported seeing it. iPhone users get it soon after, but no exact date was given. The company also says it is still building out the new photo, video and GIF Status.
The takeawayIf you want a short text line on your WhatsApp profile again, look for it in the About section once the update reaches your phone.
