An old Amazon Fire tablet can get the Google Play Store for free in about 20 to 30 minutes. The fix needs no computer and no rooting, which is a risky hack that unlocks a device's deepest settings. It means Gmail, Chrome and YouTube can run on a tablet that Amazon locked to its own app store.

Why Fire tablets are limited

Fire tablets run Fire OS, Amazon's version of Android. Amazon removes Google's apps and services from it. That means no Play Store, no Gmail, no Chrome and no official YouTube app out of the box. You get the Amazon Appstore, which has long carried far fewer apps than Google's store. Many popular apps also need Google Play services to work well.

Why now

In October 2026, Amazon launched Alexa Tablets, which run Android and get apps from the Google Play Store. The flagship Alexa Tablet 12 Pro starts at $499.99. Most Fire HD 8 and Fire HD 10 models have sold for $60 to $150. Amazon says existing Fire tablets will keep getting support for now, so there is no rush to replace one.

How the fix works

First, check your tablet's model, generation and Fire OS version in Settings. The right files depend on all three. Then allow the Silk browser to install apps from outside the Amazon Appstore. Download four Google files, called APKs, which are the install files Android uses. The source guide lists the correct versions for each model.

  • Google Account Manager
  • Google Services Framework
  • Google Play services
  • Google Play Store

Install them in that order, because the first three let the tablet sign in to your Google account and run Google's services. Then restart, open the Play Store and sign in.

What to watch out for

  • Skip sites that promise one-tap installers. They are often outdated and sometimes bundled with adware.
  • Some apps still will not install or run, especially ones that need a Google-certified device or a newer Android version.
  • On Fire OS 8, Gboard and YouTube Kids have shown Google Play Services warnings even after a good install.
  • A major Fire OS update can occasionally break the setup.

Amazon's home screen, ads on Special Offers models and Amazon apps stay in place. Tablets from 2017 and earlier run Fire OS 5, where app compatibility is weak.

The takeaway

If your Fire tablet is gathering dust, the free Play Store fix can make it a recipe screen, e-reader or kids' video player, but read the warnings first.
