Google Maps has several settings that most drivers never open. A How-To Geek writer nearly switched to another navigation app, then found these options and stayed. Four stand out: a limited-time McLaren car icon, electric vehicle settings, links to other apps, and Wi-Fi-only map downloads.

A race car for the blue arrow

Google added a McLaren F1 car icon to celebrate the United States Grand Prix. It replaces the usual blue arrow and is available until November 23, 2026. If you pick it, it also shows on your car's display when you use Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. To find it, tap your profile picture, then Settings, Your vehicles, Driving avatar. Google is rolling it out gradually, so it may not appear yet.

Electric car settings

Drivers of electric cars can tell Maps exactly what they drive. Go to your profile picture, then Settings, Your vehicles, Electric. You can add the make, model, year, trim and compatible charging plugs. After that, you can search for charging stations and filter results by plug type, so you do not have to check each station. On supported electric cars, Maps can also estimate how much battery a trip will use.

Offline maps on Wi-Fi only

Offline maps let you download an area ahead of time and still navigate if your connection drops. You can also stop those downloads from eating your mobile data. Tap your profile picture, then Settings, Offline maps, Download preferences, and choose Over Wi-Fi only. The wording may differ in your version. Offline maps have limits, though. Live traffic updates and some alternative routes still need an internet connection.

Linking other apps

Maps can connect to Google Workspace, which means Gmail, Calendar and Drive, to personalize suggestions. A hotel booking in Gmail, for example, could shape what Maps suggests for a trip. It can also connect to Google Photos, using photos, albums and location information. Some non-Google apps, such as Canva, can be linked too. Before connecting anything, check what information you are allowing Google to use.

What to do

  • Pick the McLaren icon before November 23, 2026 if you want it.
  • Save your electric car's details and plug type to filter charging stations.
  • Set offline map downloads to Over Wi-Fi only.
  • Read the permissions before linking Gmail, Photos or other apps.
The takeaway

Spend a few minutes in Google Maps settings to save mobile data and charging hassle, and review what personal info you let it use.
