Elon Musk said on Sunday that X will let you send someone $1 by pressing and holding the Like button on their post. He announced the feature in a post on X. The tip will run through X Money, the platform's payments service.

How it works

You press and hold Like on a post you appreciate. That sends a tip to the person who wrote it, and you never leave the platform. X Money handles the payment.

X Money launched in the United States in July for X Premium and Premium+ subscribers, who pay for their X plans. It lets users send money to one another. It also comes with an X-branded Visa debit card that works for purchases and ATM withdrawals.

The tip fits Musk's bigger plan to turn X into an "everything app" that combines social media, messaging and financial services. China's WeChat, developed by Tencent, works this way. Musk has talked about the plan since he bought X in 2022.

What is not known yet

  • X has not said when the feature will arrive.
  • It is unclear whether you can tip more than $1.
  • X has not announced an X Money launch date for India. The service is focused on the US.

For now, the tip applies to the same group that can use X Money: people in the US with a paid X plan. If your business posts on X, small tips could become a new source of income. X has shared no further details yet.

The takeaway

A $1 tip on X is coming through X Money, but there is no date, and it is limited to US users with a paid plan for now.
