WhatsApp is testing a button that puts Instagram Reels one tap away inside a chat. It shows up in the chat attachment menu in a new Android beta. It only works if your WhatsApp account is linked to Meta's Accounts Center, and that link is optional.
What changed
You could already send Instagram Reels from WhatsApp, but the option was tucked inside the list view of the gallery picker. Now it gets its own shortcut. WABetaInfo spotted it in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.42.9 on the Google Play Store. A beta is a test version released before the general public gets it.
Tap the button and a dedicated screen opens, where you can choose a reel or a post to send. Three tabs sit at the top:
- Recent: reels you viewed recently on Instagram
- Saved: reels you saved
- Liked: reels you liked
Tap any reel to share it in your conversation.
The catch
The feature is only on for accounts linked to Meta's Accounts Center. Without that link, you cannot use it. If you would rather keep WhatsApp separate from Instagram and Facebook, you do not have to do anything. Critics have noted that features like this nudge more people to link their accounts.
It is not yet clear when the button will reach everyone, or whether it will come to iPhones.
The takeawayThe new Reels button is convenient, but it needs a link between WhatsApp and Instagram, so decide if you want that link before you turn it on.
