WhatsApp appears to have been updated for Apple's new foldable iPhone Duo, a day before the phone reaches customers. Reddit users shared photos on Thursday showing the app filling the Duo's 5.4-inch outer display. Apps not rebuilt for the Duo sit in a phone-sized window with black bars.
What changed
In the photos, the clock, back button and video call button sit in a vertical bar along the right edge. That bar now takes on the app's own background instead of showing a black strip. One user also noted that videos now play full screen.
None of this is confirmed. Meta has not announced Duo support, and the App Store listing does not mention it. The latest build, version 26.41.75, went live Thursday with generic notes about bug fixes and performance, so it is unclear that this update caused the new look.
What users think
- Chats still do not extend under the right-hand bar.
- Some asked why the send button sits partway across the screen.
- One user wanted the chat list beside an open chat on the 7.6-inch inner display, as in Apple's Mail app.
- Others liked the back button near the thumb and the extra vertical room for messages.
The iPhone Duo arrives Friday, October 23. Canadian pre-orders started at $2,999. WhatsApp was not among the Duo-ready apps Apple highlighted, so a launch-day update matters to families who use it to keep in touch with relatives overseas. Whether a two-pane view is coming is not known.
The takeawayIf you buy a Duo, expect WhatsApp to fill the outer screen at launch, though a side-by-side chat view is not confirmed.
