T-Mobile is adding a new top home internet plan called Fiber 5 Gig, starting Nov. 3. It costs $90 a month with AutoPay billing, and it comes with a 10-year price guarantee. Taxes and fees are added on top of that price.

What you get

The plan has equal download and upload speeds, so sending files is as fast as receiving them. It includes unlimited data and a mesh Wi-Fi extender if you ask for one. That is a small device that helps spread the signal through a home.

  • Fiber 2 Gig, the next plan down, costs $70 a month.
  • Google Fiber's 3 Gig Home plan costs $100 a month.
  • A limited-time offer gives two months free through two bill credits, plus $300 in virtual prepaid cards.

Read the fine print

Fiber 5 Gig is the only T-Mobile Fiber plan with a price guarantee. The guarantee does not cover taxes and fees, voluntary equipment or speed upgrades, select limited-time promotions, per-use charges, third-party services or network management practices.

The timing stands out. T-Mobile recently settled with the New York Attorney General's Office over price guarantees on some old 4G T-Mobile One plans from almost a decade ago.

The article does not say where the plan will be available or when the promotion ends. Check both before signing up.

The takeaway

A 10-year price lock covers only the base price, so ask what taxes, fees and upgrades could add before you sign up.
