Samsung is reportedly deciding what to add to its Galaxy Z Fold lineup next year. A leaker says the choice is between a larger model and a cheaper one. Only one would go into production. The report comes from one source and Samsung has not confirmed it.

The two options

The leaker, who posts as Lanzuk on the Korean site Naver, says the Galaxy Z Fold 8 got a much better response than expected. That is why Samsung wants more choices. The Fold 8 is smaller and wider than earlier Folds. A Fold is a phone that opens like a book into a larger screen.

  • Galaxy Z Fold 9 Plus: same wide shape as the standard Fold 9, with larger screens. It would not be an Ultra model.
  • Galaxy Z Fold 9 FE: weaker hardware in exchange for a lower price.

Samsung is said to be testing both. The leaker says a decision will come soon.

Why a cheaper Fold is not a sure thing

Samsung tried a cheaper foldable before, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE. The writer at 9to5Google says it sold poorly, partly because its cuts were not appealing on a style of phone already losing popularity.

The writer would welcome a Fold around $1,400, but doubts Samsung can price one that low. He points to the company's profit struggles and rising prices, including the cost of memory chips. The $1,400 figure is his example, not a leaked price.

What is not known

Nothing about price, release date or final specs has been confirmed. Which model wins is still open.

The takeaway

A cheaper Samsung Fold is only a rumor, and a bigger one is just as likely, so there is no reason to hold off buying on this report alone.
