Reddit is changing its home page. Users will now see two choices when they open it: "For You" and "Following." Reddit announced the change on Wednesday and says it will reach everyone worldwide over the next few weeks.
What changed
The For You feed mixes posts from communities you have joined with recommendations based on your interests. Reddit says this will help people find communities and conversations they might not have come across otherwise. The Following feed is simpler. It shows only posts from communities you have joined.
- For You: your communities plus recommended posts
- Following: only communities you have joined
- Reddit remembers the feed you used last and opens to it next time
Why it matters
Reddit is following TikTok, which popularized the "For You" feed. Instagram, X, Threads and Facebook have adopted similar feeds. Some users who saw the new feed during testing have already voiced frustration. Some people prefer a home page limited to communities they chose.
Reddit says the feed is a first step toward helping people discover something new and relevant. TechCrunch notes the company likely hopes it will push people to engage beyond the communities they already follow.
What is not known yet
The material does not say how much of the For You feed will be recommended posts versus posts from your communities. It also does not give an exact date for when each person will see the change. Anyone who wants a tidier home page can switch to Following once it appears.
The takeawayOnce the new feeds appear, choose Following if you want only posts from communities you joined; Reddit will remember your pick.
