Choosing between Perplexity Pro and ChatGPT Plus may come down to one question: where does your work slow down? Finding sources you can check is one problem. Turning those sources into a report, a calculation or an ongoing project is another. Each service leans toward one of them, though both can search the web and work with uploaded files.

What each plan offers

Perplexity's Pro guide lists ten times as many citations per answer, extended Research access, more file uploads and a choice of models. It also describes tools for making reports and spreadsheets. ChatGPT Plus, according to OpenAI's plan details, adds expanded deep research, more messages and uploads, projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs. Limits apply.

What the one test showed

Tom's Guide ran three prompts in both tools. Its writer preferred Perplexity for topic brainstorming, a subtopic outline and question refining. Two Perplexity outputs included ten source links. The test did not follow one project from sources to a finished report and a spreadsheet, so it says little about the later stages.

More links also do not mean more accuracy. A source can be reputable and still cover a different year, place or definition than the claim next to it.

A test you can run yourself

Pick one topic close to your real work and give both tools the same requests and the same file. The article suggests the latest national data on US public-library visits as an example. Save each answer before asking a follow-up. Then keep a simple record, one row per stage:

  • Usable source
  • Supported claim
  • Sound synthesis
  • Correct calculation
  • Time spent repairing the answer

How to decide

Perplexity Pro fits best if most sessions start with an unfamiliar, current question and end once you have sources worth opening. ChatGPT Plus fits best if you already have material, or if research keeps going into files, analysis, writing and a project you will revisit. If both handle discovery well, pick the one that needs less fixing later. These are suggested criteria, not measured results for either plan.

The takeaway

Run the same real task in both tools and track how long you spend fixing each answer before you decide which subscription to pay for.
