Apple's smart home screen may soon let you talk to ChatGPT

Code in an iOS 27.3 beta suggests Apple's HomeView smart display could run AI chatbots such as ChatGPT next to Siri. Nothing is confirmed.

Apple appears to be preparing its HomeView smart home hub to host AI chatbots. Code in the iOS 27.3 beta adds a new category called "Conversational Apps." The Tech Buzz reports it could let assistants like ChatGPT and Claude run alongside Siri. Apple has not announced anything, and the signs so far come from unfinished software.

What the code shows

A developer named pdfu found the new category and posted about it on X. Apple has not said which apps would qualify. The chatbot names come from the outlet's reading of the label, not from Apple.

The beta also includes two-way audio routing and session management. Those are the tools a device needs to handle more than one voice assistant at a time. Pdfu says some of these features are not "fully wired up" yet, so the work is still in progress.

The security piece

The code also adds protection against spoofing, meaning someone faking access with a copied or cloned voice. After three failed attempts, HomeView would ask you to confirm on your iPhone. That matters if a device in your kitchen or living room can answer to a chatbot.

What is still unknown

  • Which chatbots, if any, Apple will allow
  • Whether Apple vets each app or opens the door widely
  • When this would reach the public, since the beta gives no timeline
  • What voice data each chatbot would collect or keep

Why it could matter

Amazon and Google have already added generative AI to their Echo and Nest devices. Apple's home products look dated next to them, according to the report. Letting you choose which AI answers could close that gap. Apple has also warned in regulatory filings that AI agents might exceed their permissions. A closed, vetted setup on HomeView would give it more control than letting AI roam freely across iOS.

What to do

There is nothing to switch on today. If the feature ships, treat each chatbot like any app with a microphone. Check what voice data it collects and whether it stores recordings before you enable it in a shared room. Beta code often changes before release, and some of it never ships.

The takeaway

Apple may let you pick which AI chatbot answers on its HomeView hub, but it is unconfirmed, so check each chatbot's voice data practices before using one.
