A new Android phone now comes with a 10,000mAh battery. That is twice the 5,000mAh found in many top phones today. Android Authority used the news to argue that flagship phones from Samsung and Google really ought to offer more than 5,000mAh.

What mAh means

The unit mAh stands for milliamp-hour. It measures how big a phone battery is. A bigger number usually means more time between charges. It is not a perfect guide, since other parts of a phone also affect how long it lasts. Still, it is a handy number to check when you shop.

What changed

Most top phones have settled around 5,000mAh. This new model doubles that figure. Android Authority says Samsung and Google, two of the biggest names in Android, should be offering more in their flagship phones, which are their most advanced and most expensive models.

What is not known yet

The material available here does not say which brand made the phone. It also gives no price, release date or countries where it will sell. There are no details on how much longer it lasts in real use, or on its size and weight. Samsung and Google have not been quoted on any plans for bigger batteries.

What to do

If battery life is your biggest complaint about your phone, add battery size to your shopping list. Compare the mAh number across models. Then look for reviews that test how long each phone really lasts before you buy.

The takeaway

If short battery life annoys you, compare mAh numbers and real-world battery tests before buying your next phone.
