New York State is putting $10 million into training residents for jobs that use artificial intelligence, and into placing them in those jobs. More than $3 million will go toward building the AI Jobs Institute, a hub where people take courses and learn AI skills. Businesses can also get help adopting AI services there, state officials said.
What the plan includes
The goal is to train up to 40,000 New Yorkers by 2032. The nonprofit Pursuit, which focuses on workforce development, will lead the effort. Its CEO, Nick Simmons, said the money lets the group test new training ideas, such as AI apprenticeships, where people learn on the job.
The institute will also help small businesses and nonprofits try out AI tools and expand their use. It will bring together employers, job seekers and industry leaders to talk about what skills are needed. Backers include Anthropic, Google.org, OpenAI, the New York Jobs CEO Council and some New York City agencies.
Who it affects
People will apply to take part. Low-income adult learners get priority. Simmons said past tech shifts often reached wealthier people first, and lower-income communities got access years later. He said this program aims to avoid that.
Simmons also cited a January 2025 World Economic Forum report. It projected that 59% of the global workforce will need new or improved skills by 2030 as employers adopt technology like AI.
Other state efforts
The institute is one piece of a larger push by Gov. Kathy Hochul. Related steps include:
- A FutureWorks Commission, launched in March, to study how AI affects the state's workers and economy.
- A statewide pilot that gives state employees AI training and tools.
- An expanded program that lets adults ages 25 to 55 attend certain community colleges for free in fields like AI.
What happens next
The institute will be in Queens, in a 40,000 square foot building. Construction is slated to start this winter, and the doors are expected to open in mid-2027.
Some details are not yet public. The material does not say how to apply, what the courses will cost participants, or how small businesses can sign up for help. Those answers will likely come closer to the opening.
The takeawayIf you want AI training or help for a small business, watch for application details from Pursuit before the Queens institute opens in mid-2027.
