Apple's newest Pro iPhones are selling worse in the US and Japan than last year's models did, but a big jump in China kept global sales growing. Counterpoint Research, a market research firm, says worldwide sales rose 3.1% in the first three weeks, compared with the same stretch for the iPhone 17 Pro series.

What the numbers show

  • US: down 4%
  • Japan: down 27%
  • China: up 29%

Counterpoint says China gained from better early supply than last year and from price hikes on rival flagship phones from Chinese Android makers. Without China, global growth would have been far weaker. In the US and Japan, prices are higher than on the previous models. US buyers largely do not see meaningful gains in features or design. In Japan, exchange rates made the price increases hurt more.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max made up 56% of Pro-series sales, down slightly from 57% last year. Counterpoint points to higher prices and to growth in India and Southeast Asia leaning toward the smaller Pro.

What is not known yet

The report gives no unit counts. Counterpoint's Sujeong Lim says it is unclear whether China's strength is lasting demand or early buying. The iPhone Duo, launching in Week 43, came after the period covered, so its effect is unknown. It could add sales or pull buyers away from the Pro Max.

The takeaway

Many US buyers see little upgrade for the higher price, so there is no clear reason to rush a new Pro purchase.
