Meta locked the No Kings Instagram account during a vote drive

Meta admitted it wrongly suspended the No Kings Instagram account during a nationwide event day. Here is why any group that relies on Instagram should take note.

On October 17, Meta suspended the official Instagram account of the No Kings Coalition while almost 3,000 events were running across the United States. The campaign encouraged Americans to vote early in the November 3 midterm elections. Meta has since said the suspension was a mistake. The account was still locked for hours.

What happened

Organisers lost access at about 1:30pm Eastern, when they needed the account to talk to people at the events. The account became publicly visible again after roughly 90 minutes. Organisers still could not post anything until Meta restored full access at 5:33pm.

Two explanations from Meta

Meta's communications chief, Andy Stone, first said the account posted, shared or commented so often that it triggered automated systems. He called the action an error. Organisers disputed this. They said they had posted only a handful of times and were livestreaming the events.

The next day, Stone gave a different reason. He said the spike was mainly in reading activity, not posting. According to Meta, its security systems detected a Claude tool, which is AI software from Anthropic, reading profiles, posts and hashtags. He said requests rose about four times in intense bursts.

What is not known

The details come from a post by Paul Walsh, an independent technical analyst who criticizes Meta's handling. He says his analysis is not an endorsement of the group's politics. He points out several gaps in what Meta has said:

  • Meta did not name the tool or say who was running it.
  • It did not say whether the organisers had approved it.
  • It gave no request counts, time period or security thresholds.
  • It did not say which rule, if any, using Claude with Instagram would break.

Without those numbers, Walsh argues, a figure like four times normal says little. Meta has not answered these points in the material available so far.

What to do

Automated systems can lock an account without warning, and fixing it can take hours even when the company agrees it was wrong. For a business, club or campaign, that can land on the busiest day of the year. Keep other ways to reach people, such as an email list, a text group or a website. Share them with followers before you need them.

The takeaway

Do not rely on one social account to reach your people. Keep an email list or text group ready in case an automated lockout hits at a key moment.
