iOS 27 brings a smarter Siri and faster iPhones this fall

Apple's iOS 27 promises a more capable Siri and a faster phone for iPhone 11 and newer. It also raises a question about what Siri can see.

Apple has unveiled iOS 27, the next version of the iPhone's operating system, and it is due this fall for iPhone 11 and newer. The two biggest changes are a Siri that can dig through your own messages, mail and calendar, and a speed boost Apple says reaches older phones too. The details come from a report by the outlet آي-فون إسلام on Apple's WWDC developer conference.

What changed

Siri now lives in the Dynamic Island, the pill-shaped area at the top of newer iPhones. It is powered by custom Google Gemini models running on Apple's Private Cloud Compute, Apple's own secure servers. Siri can reach data in Messages, Calendar, Mail, Phone and Music. One example: ask for "that song" a friend sent weeks ago, and Siri can find the Apple Music link in your old messages. A new Siri app also lets you browse past conversations.

Apple also gave speed figures for the update. These are Apple's own claims, not independent tests:

  • Apps launch 30% faster.
  • New photos load 70% faster.
  • AirDrop file transfers are 80% faster.

Useful extras

Several smaller features could matter in daily life. Safari can watch a page through a "Notify You" feature and alert you when something changes, such as sold-out concert tickets, flight prices or product availability. The Shortcuts app can build an automation from a plain sentence, such as sending your arrival time to family when you leave work.

  • The Passwords app can log in automatically and update leaked or compromised passwords.
  • The camera can scan a bill to split it, or add events from posters to your calendar.
  • Photos gets Clean Up, Expand and Spatial Reframing tools.
  • AirPods get a Custom EQ to adjust sound.

What to do

If you have an iPhone 11 or newer, expect the update this fall. Before Siri gets wider access, think about what you are comfortable letting it see. Messages, Mail, Calendar and Phone hold sensitive material. Apple says the work runs on Private Cloud Compute, but the report does not explain which controls you will get to limit Siri's access.

What is not known yet

The report says the update is in developer beta now. It also lists a public beta for users "next July," a date that sits oddly beside a fall release, so check Apple's own timing. It mentions family safety tools but gives no details. The speed claims also have not been tested by outside reviewers.

The takeaway

If your iPhone is an 11 or newer, expect iOS 27 this fall, and decide what Siri should be allowed to see before you turn the new features on.
