India's Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) plans to settle some inactive accounts on its own. Accounts with balances of up to ₹1,000 will be paid out automatically, with no separate claim from the member. The plan was announced around EPFO's 74th Foundation Day, held in New Delhi on Sunday, 1 November 2026.

What changed

EPFO runs the provident fund, a retirement savings scheme for employees in India. People who changed jobs or left the workforce sometimes leave small balances sitting in old accounts. Under the proposal, eligible inoperative accounts with up to ₹1,000 will be cleared without the member going through a settlement process that can take a lot of time. EPFO also plans new WhatsApp services. Labour Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya is inaugurating the event, according to a Press Information Bureau release.

What is not known yet

The press release does not give the detailed eligibility rules. It does not say exactly which accounts count as inoperative. It also does not list which services will be available on WhatsApp. It gives no start date for either initiative, and none is claimed here.

For anyone who once worked in India and left a small balance behind, the practical step is to keep personal details current so a payout can reach the right person. The event will also include the Bhavishya Nidhi Awards 2026, which honor EPFO offices and staff.

The takeaway

If you left a small provident fund balance in India, keep your details current and watch for EPFO's full eligibility rules.
