Kin Insurance now lets ChatGPT shop for a home insurance quote in minutes, but a fast quote can skip choices like deductibles and flood cover.

Kin Insurance, a Chicago-based home insurer that sells directly to customers, now lets ChatGPT shop for a home insurance quote for you. Kin says the AI can go from a simple request to a customized quote that is ready to buy within minutes.

What changed

Kin turned on WebMCP on its website, Kin.com. WebMCP is an open web standard that lets an AI agent use a website directly, rather than through a separately installed plug-in. CEO Sean Harper said the aim is to let someone tell ChatGPT, "Help me shop for home insurance," and make it incredibly easy for the agent to shop Kin.

There are limits. It works only for paid ChatGPT users on the browser-based version. Kin has also said it will let AI shopping agents, including Meta's Muse, onto its site rather than block them. In Kin's testing, Muse pulled home insurance quotes after asking consumers only a few questions.

How other insurers compare

Kin is one of a growing number of companies building for AI-assisted shopping. In February, Insurify launched an app in ChatGPT's app directory for car insurance rate estimates and comparisons. In May, Liberty Mutual launched a ChatGPT app for personalized auto quotes in seven states, with the purchase finished on its website. It plans to reach more than 40 states by the end of the year. In March, Aviva launched a home insurance quote app in the UK.

Kin took a different route. It did not build an app inside ChatGPT. It made its own website readable by any agent that supports WebMCP. Harper says selling directly, plus analyzing thousands of data points about individual homes, means much of the information for a quote can be gathered without asking the homeowner.

What a quick quote can miss

The current tools produce quotes. The purchase is completed on the insurer's site, and the agent does not advise on coverage gaps, endorsements or claims. In states exposed to disasters, such as Florida, where Kin writes much of its business, home insurance involves real choices. A one-line prompt will not capture them. Before buying, check:

  • The deductible, which is what you pay before coverage starts
  • Whether wind and flood cover are included
  • Which discounts for protecting your home apply
  • Any gaps in coverage the quote does not mention

Who it affects

Independent agents are watching closely. An AI agent takes over the shopping and comparison work agents have long done for clients. Two responses are emerging: compete on advice AI cannot easily match, or make sure their carriers and comparison tools are visible to AI agents. If shoppers start in ChatGPT, the quotes it can reach will decide who gets considered.

The takeaway

An AI can get you a home insurance quote fast, but you still need to check the deductible, flood and wind cover, and discounts yourself.
