Hidden code in macOS 27, the next version of Apple's Mac software, appears to show five iPhone-style pill designs. That hints the new MacBook Pro will swap its camera notch for a Dynamic Island-like cutout. Apple is expected to announce new touchscreen MacBook Pro models later today.

What was found

A code explorer known as pdfu found five on-screen designs and shared them on X. The Dynamic Island is the pill-shaped area on the iPhone that shows quick alerts. The Mac versions cover:

  • AirPods connecting
  • Focus mode turning on
  • AirPods noise cancellation
  • Low battery
  • Automatic audio switching

The designs are tied to a new menu bar piece called MenuBarAgent. The menu bar is the strip across the top of the Mac screen. Pdfu says it "paves the way for a touchscreen Mac and a Dynamic Island." He adds that some compact views already ship. He also claims Siri AI will eventually use a droplet-like design he calls the "system aperture."

What is not known

This comes from code, not from Apple. The report does not say how touch controls would work, what the new models will cost or when they will go on sale. The Siri claim is pdfu's own. The new MacBook Pros are expected to drop the notch that has been part of the design since 2021. Anyone planning a Mac purchase may want to wait for Apple's announcement.

The takeaway

If you plan to buy a MacBook Pro soon, read Apple's announcement first, since the screen design and touch features may be changing.
