Google has released so many Gemini AI models that choosing one has become a chore. A new guide from Android Police says most people should start with Gemini 3.8 Flash. It balances speed, smarts and everyday use. The other models still have a place, but for narrower jobs.

Why not just use the strongest one

It is tempting to pick the most powerful model and stay there. The guide argues against that. Not every task needs advanced reasoning. Using the top model to fix a typo or write a two-line email is compared to using a high-end gaming PC to open a calculator. It works, but it wastes what makes the model special and burns unnecessary tokens, the small units of text an AI uses up as it works.

The reverse is also true. The lightest model is fine for casual questions, but it struggles with complicated problems or hard programming work.

Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite

This is Google's lightweight model. It favors speed and efficiency over deep thinking. The guide suggests it for simple, quick jobs:

  • Straightforward questions and explaining a technical term
  • Rewriting sentences and drafting short emails
  • Summarizing short articles and organizing notes
  • Pulling information from documents and making quick lists

It is not the first choice for complicated coding, in-depth research or problems that need several steps of logic.

Gemini 3.8 Flash

This is the guide's pick for regular use. Despite the Flash name, it is not just a faster, lighter model. Google has improved its reasoning, coding and handling of multistep tasks. It can analyze long documents, build a detailed travel itinerary around a fixed budget, compare products, explain hard concepts and help debug code. Users can also adjust its thinking level to match the request, so there is less need to switch models.

Pro and Argon

Gemini 3.1 Pro focuses on advanced reasoning and complex instructions. It can serve as a second opinion if Flash gives a shallow answer. The guide notes that the newer Flash may beat Pro in some cases, and still recommends starting with 3.8 Flash.

Gemini 4 Argon sits at the top of the lineup. It is built for demanding software projects, math and science reasoning, and analysis of complex documents. Examples include studying a large codebase or comparing several long reports to find connections.

The takeaway

Start with Gemini 3.8 Flash, use Flash-Lite for quick chores, and save Gemini 4 Argon for hard coding, math and long reports.
