Coinbase announced on October 22, 2026 that AI assistants can now trade inside customer accounts. You can connect tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Grok and Muse, then buy and sell crypto, stocks and derivatives from a single chat. The company posted on X that "Coinbase is open for AI agents." The feature is live now.

What changed

Until now, an AI chatbot could talk about markets but could not act on your account. Now it can. Coinbase has approved several assistants, including ChatGPT, Grok, Perplexity Computer, Claude, Claude Code and Codex CLI. A September 2026 update also added U.S. stocks and ETFs. It also added a way for agents to pay for market data using a user's USD Coin balance.

How it works

The link runs through Coinbase's MCP server. MCP stands for model context protocol, a standard way for AI assistants to plug into other apps. In ChatGPT, for example, you add a Coinbase web address as a custom server and log in. An approval screen then lets you pick which portfolios the AI can reach.

  • You choose which portfolios the AI agent can access.
  • You can preview orders before they execute.
  • You can disconnect the agent at any time.

The risks

Most of the risk sits with the user. The biggest one is a misunderstood instruction. If you ask for "a little crypto," the AI has to guess what "a little" means, and you are still responsible for the trade. Another risk is prompt injection, where hidden text tricks an AI into acting against its owner. Rogue agent tools could also compromise Coinbase logins, and broad permissions make any of these problems worse.

One point in Coinbase's favor: unlike Telegram trading bots, your money stays in a regulated exchange account, with order previews and an off switch.

What to do

Coinbase itself advises creating a separate portfolio just for AI trading. Fund it only with money you can afford to lose, and give the agent access to that portfolio alone. That way a bad trade or a hijacked agent cannot reach your main savings.

What happens next

Coinbase has not shared fees, user counts or revenue goals for the feature. CEO Brian Armstrong said on the July 30 earnings call that agentic finance is still early and that the company has no specific forecasts. Coinbase shares closed around $169 on October 22, down 4.5%, and most of that drop came before the announcement. Next signal: the Q3 2026 earnings report.

The takeaway

If you connect an AI to Coinbase, use a separate small portfolio with only money you can afford to lose, and check every order preview.
