Claude can read about 2.5 times more text at once than the largest window ChatGPT offers. Anthropic's documentation says Claude 4.6 and later models handle up to 1 million tokens. ChatGPT's largest reasoning window is 400K tokens, and only the Pro plan gets it.
What the numbers mean
A token is a small chunk of text. A common rule of thumb says one token is about three-quarters of an English word. That puts 1 million tokens at roughly 750,000 words. It is enough for several long novels, a large codebase or a stack of contracts in a single prompt.
The catch with Claude
Two Claude models do not get the full 1 million window: Claude Haiku 5.5 and Claude Mythos Preview. Pick a smaller, cheaper model and you may lose the feature that made Claude attractive. Check the model name before pasting in a 400-page file. A big window also does not guarantee good recall. Long prompts cost more to process and can dilute the model's focus on the detail you need.
ChatGPT by plan
ChatGPT sets its limits by plan and by mode. GPT Instant is the fast everyday mode. The reasoning mode spends more effort on hard problems and gets a bigger window. OpenAI's pricing page lists these figures:
- Free: 27K tokens for GPT Instant, about 37 times smaller than Claude's 1 million.
- Go and Plus: 54K instant, 256K reasoning. The limits are identical.
- Pro: 128K instant, 400K reasoning, about 56% more reasoning room than Plus.
Plans keep shifting. Claude shows Free, Pro, Max 5x and Max 20x. ChatGPT shows Free, Go, Plus and Pro. Claude's pricing page also lists a $17 monthly rate with an annual discount, billed as $200 up front.
What about Gemini
Little about Google's Gemini could be confirmed. No current model names, prices, context limits or benchmark results cleared verification, so none are given here. Check Google's own pages before paying. No verified benchmark ranks all three assistants against each other either, so claims of a clear winner rest on shaky ground.
What to do
Start with your longest regular task, such as a big file or a set of contracts, and pick the plan and exact model that can hold it. Many developers do not choose just one. The 2025 Stack Overflow Developer Survey shows them using several assistants at once, since each has a different ceiling and price.
The takeawayBefore paying for an AI plan, match it to your longest regular task and check the exact model name, since some Claude models lack the full 1 million window.
