What happenedFive major AI chatbots, including ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot and Grok, suffered outages at the same time on Thursday.
Who is affectedAnyone using ChatGPT, Codex, Claude, Gemini, Copilot or Grok, including businesses that rely on them for daily work.
What to do
  1. 1Check the company's status page before assuming the problem is on your end.
  2. 2Avoid resubmitting the same request over and over while a service is down.
  3. 3Keep important drafts and files saved outside the chatbot.
  4. 4Line up a backup tool for urgent tasks so one outage does not stall your day.

Five of the biggest AI chatbots broke at the same time on Thursday. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot and Grok all had trouble, and thousands of users reported problems. By early afternoon Eastern time, Mashable reported that all of the providers had been restored.

What happened

Outage tracker DownDetector showed trouble starting around 11 a.m. ET, first with ChatGPT. Reports for chatbots from Anthropic, Google, Microsoft and xAI followed. OpenAI's status page listed "elevated errors across ChatGPT and Codex." Anthropic's page said several Claude models were affected, and its spokesperson described a partial outage across Claude.ai, Claude Code, Claude Cowork and the Claude API.

Short outages happen now and then and usually clear fast. Several services failing together is highly unusual.

What caused it

No single cause has been given. Anthropic blamed an infrastructure issue and said service was restored at 16:16 UTC, which is 9:16 a.m. Pacific. SpaceX apologized on X and said Grok went down because of "an outage at our Memphis compute center." Elon Musk said the company is "taking corrective action to ensure this does not happen again."

OpenAI said it had applied a fix and was watching the recovery. The material does not say why all five failed at once, and it does not say whether the outages were linked.

Who it affects

Anyone who used ChatGPT, Codex, Claude, Gemini, Copilot or Grok on Thursday could have been hit. Businesses that lean on these tools for daily work felt it most. If you did not use them that day, you can relax. The services are back.

What to do

The alert box above lists the steps. The main idea is simple: do not let one tool be the only way to finish urgent work. Check the company's status page before blaming your own connection, and keep important files saved outside the chatbot.

What happens next

Watch for fuller explanations from OpenAI, Google and Microsoft, which have not said what went wrong in the material available. Anthropic and SpaceX have named causes, though not in detail. Until the cause is clear, another outage is possible, so a backup plan is a sensible habit.

The takeaway

AI chatbots can fail, even several at once, so keep a backup tool and your important work saved outside them.
