OpenAI says ChatGPT can now connect to iCloud Mail and Calendar, the email and calendar that come with an Apple account. Gmail and other services already worked this way. Apple users were left out until this announcement.
What changed
The connection works through plugins. OpenAI says they are available on all ChatGPT plans, on the web, in the desktop app and on iOS. Once connected, you can ask ChatGPT to:
- Find a specific email
- Catch up on your inbox
- Check what is next on your calendar
- Update a calendar event
What is not known yet
The announcement names only the web, desktop and iOS. Other ChatGPT features do not always work together at launch. Dots, a proactive agent feature (one that acts without being asked each time), may finally work with iCloud, but that is untested. The same goes for the Work and Codex features. 9to5Mac says it will need to test how far the connection reaches.
Connecting also means giving ChatGPT access to your mail and schedule. The material does not describe the permission settings, so it is worth deciding what you are comfortable sharing before you switch it on.
The takeawayIf you use an Apple email address, you can now try ChatGPT on inbox and calendar chores, but weigh the access you grant first.
