BILL, a company that provides a financial operations platform for businesses, says its AI agents now finish an underwriting case in about 12 minutes. It used to take three hours. CEO and founder René Lacerte shared the figure on Thursday, Nov. 5, during the company's first quarter fiscal 2027 earnings call.
What changed
Underwriting is the review a company does to decide whether to approve a customer. BILL's risk team built more than 100 AI agents over the past year. These are programs that complete set tasks on their own, such as pulling case files, drafting credit assessments or writing model documentation. Lacerte said they work 24/7 and save more than 1,400 hours a month, about eight full-time employees.
One group of three agents, called Robin, handles underwriting cases. It sends each case to the right underwriter, pulls the customer's data into a summary and offers a one-click link to make a decision. Before, underwriters pieced each case together from chat messages, email and separate dashboards.
The bigger picture
Lacerte also said BILL launched five products in the quarter and built a Visa pilot in four weeks. Its AI-powered Chat with BILL now handles 45% of customer support conversations. In May, he said BILL planned to cut its workforce by 30% as it focused on AI.
The numbers come from the company's own call. The material does not say how many underwriters BILL has, or how much faster customers actually get approved.
The takeawayIf you use a finance provider, ask how it uses AI to speed up approvals, since BILL says one review fell from three hours to 12 minutes.
