Apple TV is about to get two useful upgrades on iPhone and iPad. According to 9to5Mac, iOS 27.2 arrives next week and adds separate viewer profiles and optional sign language on select movies and shows.

What changed

Until now, Apple TV was the only major streaming service without user profiles on iPhone and iPad. Profiles already worked on the big-screen version, called tvOS. Now they are coming to Apple's other devices too.

  • Profiles sync across devices, so each person keeps their own history, queue and recommendations.
  • A child's profile shows only age-appropriate Apple TV content.
  • New profile pictures feature characters from The Snoopy Show, Frog and Toad, and Stillwater.

Sign language is the second feature. Viewers can turn on American Sign Language (ASL) or British Sign Language (BSL) for select titles. The option is in Settings, then Apps, then TV, then Sign Language.

What is not known yet

It is unclear how many Apple TV titles will offer sign language at launch. Apple has not been quoted on that in the material available.

Who it affects

Anyone sharing one Apple TV account will notice the change most. Each person's picks no longer mix together, and parents get a simple way to keep kids to suitable shows. Apple TV costs $14.99 per month, or less through the Apple One bundle.

The takeaway

After updating to iOS 27.2, set up a profile for each family member and check Settings for the new sign language option.
