Apple released step-by-step repair manuals for the iPhone Duo on the same day the foldable went on sale in October 2026. That is a notable shift for a company that once made independent repair hard. If a Duo breaks, owners and local repair shops now have official instructions to work from.
What changed
The guides cover roughly 20 to 22 parts, including displays, batteries, the logic board (the phone's main circuit board), cameras and the USB-C port. They include diagrams, tool lists and safety instructions. There are also videos on handling broken glass and on the Duo's two-battery design.
Why the Duo is hard to fix
The Duo has two displays, two batteries and a hinge made of more than a hundred precision parts. Several early owners reported the inner screen cracking along the hinge after fewer than 20 folds. One verified case in Australia happened after six hours. Apple Stores swapped some phones under warranty. Outside warranty, an inner screen repair costs $999.
What is still missing
Parts are the gap. Duo parts are not available yet. For the iPhone 18 Pro, parts reached Apple's Self Service Repair Store about a month after launch. Digital Trends guesses Duo parts could follow around November 2026, but that is speculation. Limits will remain even then:
- Apple does not sell the hinge alone. Damage means replacing the whole inner display assembly.
- Displays, batteries and cameras need serial-number pairing and Apple's Repair Assistant steps.
- Skipping those steps can disable features or trigger warnings.
- Apple still controls parts availability, pricing and repair authentication.
Writing a manual is cheaper and faster than making, labeling, stocking and shipping genuine parts. The author also notes that EU rules require parts and repair information for seven years after sales end, and that EU countries had to adopt a Right to Repair Directive by July 31, 2026. Whether those rules shaped Apple's move is not proven.
How rivals compare
Google has published official repair manuals for its whole Pixel 11 lineup, including the Pixel 11 Pro Fold. Samsung offers self-repair parts and manuals for recent Galaxy S and Z Fold models. Repair site iFixit gave the Duo a provisional 5 out of 10 for repairability and called it the most repairable foldable. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Pixel 11 Pro Fold each got 4 out of 10, with the hinge flagged as a major challenge on both.
The takeawayThe iPhone Duo now has official repair guides, but until parts go on sale, a broken inner screen out of warranty still means a $999 repair.
