Apple quietly raised the maximum trade-in values for its older iPads and Macs this week. A Mac Pro can now bring up to $2,560, up from $2,195. If you have been thinking about handing in an old device, the offers are better than they were a few days ago.
What changed
The increase came as Apple launched the new iPad mini, the M6 MacBook Pro and the M6 iMac. MacRumors was the first to notice. Apple has not said whether the launches are the reason. The figures below are maximums. What you actually get depends on your exact model and its condition.
Mac offers
Macs saw the biggest jumps. These are the old and new maximums for the four biggest changes:
- MacBook Pro: from $1,315 to $1,435
- MacBook Air: from $705 to $795
- Mac Studio: from $1,460 to $1,700
- Mac Pro: from $2,195 to $2,560
The iMac rose from $385 to $440. The Mac mini rose from $620 to $645. The iMac Pro is the only listed Mac that did not change. Its maximum stays at $340.
iPad offers
The iPad increases are smaller, between $10 and $20 at the top end of each range.
- iPad: from $280 to $300
- iPad mini: from $320 to $340
- iPad Air: from $510 to $525
- iPad Pro: from $905 to $915
What to do
If you plan to upgrade, check Apple's new offer for your device. It is still worth a look at other options before you commit. Apple's trade-in program is mostly about convenience, as Mashable notes. You hand over the old device as part of buying the new one.
That ease can cost you. Even with the higher values, you may get more by selling the device on a resale marketplace. Get a quote from Apple, then compare it with what similar devices sell for elsewhere. Weigh the extra money against the extra effort of selling it yourself.
The takeawayApple now pays more for old iPads and Macs, but get a resale price too, because selling it yourself may bring in more.
