Apple has reportedly built a way for iPhone owners to choose which AI assistant they use, including ChatGPT, instead of Siri. The claim comes from journalist Mark Gurman and was covered by the outlet آي-فون إسلام. The feature is called Extensions and is expected in iOS 27, Apple's next iPhone software.

What the report says

Extensions is described as an internal system that lets outside AI assistants connect to Siri and Apple Intelligence, Apple's own set of AI features. Apple would not need to write separate connection software for each app. Compatible services would plug in through one standard method.

Signs of it are already in the first iOS 27 developer beta, an early test version meant for app makers. The feature is switched off, but Apple has reportedly built a full settings panel for it. It also set aside a section of the App Store to show AI apps that work with it.

Talks with AI companies

Apple reportedly met OpenAI, Anthropic (the maker of Claude) and Google. The talks covered what permissions developers would need to request so their services could work inside Siri and the rest of the system.

Why Apple stayed quiet

Extensions was not shown at WWDC, Apple's yearly developer conference, even though it had reportedly been in internal testing for months. Experts quoted in the coverage suggest several reasons:

  • Showing so much openness could weaken Apple's case against antitrust claims in the European Union.
  • Talk of other services could distract from the new Siri update.
  • Ending ChatGPT's general exclusivity could cause legal trouble with OpenAI.
  • The message was already complicated, with Apple Intelligence, Google models and a rebuilt Siri.

What is not known yet

Apple has not announced a launch date for developers or the public. Because the feature is off in the beta, it is unclear what the final version will look like or whether it will ship as described. These are reported details, not an Apple announcement.

What to do

Nothing yet. If the feature does arrive, you could pick which assistant handles your requests. That means choosing which company sees what you ask, so it is worth deciding in advance which one you trust with your data.

The takeaway

If iOS 27 lets you swap Siri for another AI assistant, check which company you trust with your requests before you switch.
