Amazon is turning its shopping app into a place to handle a sore throat, a refill or a weight loss prescription. In its third-quarter earnings report on Thursday, Oct. 29, the company said the number of people using Amazon Pharmacy rose more than 60% from a year earlier. Repeat customers rose more than 50%.
What changed
Amazon also said three-hour prescription delivery now reaches more than 350 cities. In February, the company added Idaho and Massachusetts to same-day delivery. It set a goal of nearly 4,500 U.S. cities and towns by the end of 2026.
CEO Andy Jassy named pharmacy among the businesses "progressing encouragingly," along with grocery, Amazon Leo and Zoox.
How the pieces fit
The front door is Health AI, an assistant Amazon put in its website and app in March. It first appeared inside One Medical, Amazon's clinic service, in January. It answers health questions, explains lab results and manages prescriptions. It can also connect you to a One Medical clinician by message, video or in person.
- Eligible Prime members get free message visits for more than 30 common conditions.
- Prime includes up to five free virtual care visits.
- A weight loss drug renewal costs $29 by message or $49 by video visit.
- Amazon Pharmacy fills the order, with same-day delivery.
Amazon says the assistant is built to support a patient's relationship with a provider, not replace it.
How rivals compare
OpenAI launched ChatGPT Health in January. It said more than 230 million people ask health and wellness questions on ChatGPT each week. Perplexity launched its own health product in March. Neither can write a prescription or deliver one. Amazon's setup passes the question to a clinician, then the prescription to a pharmacy Amazon owns.
Why it matters
People are already comfortable with this. A PYMNTS Intelligence report from June 2025 found more than 60% of U.S. consumers used at least one digital health tool in the past year. About 30% of millennial and Gen Z patients had their latest visit remotely.
For Prime members, the upside is free virtual visits and fast delivery. The trade-off is that the whole process sits with one company that holds your health information.
What is not known
Amazon has not said whether Health AI is driving the pharmacy growth. The October release reported pharmacy numbers. An earlier release reported how many virtual visits start with Health AI. No Amazon disclosure links the two. The next thing to watch is the same-day delivery buildout.
The takeawayIf you use Prime, Amazon can now take you from a health question to a delivered prescription, so weigh the convenience against one company holding your health data.
