Apple is turning on hearing aid and hearing test features for AirPods Pro in five Canadian provinces: Alberta, British Columbia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Saskatchewan. The change comes with the iOS 27.2 and iPadOS 27.2 software updates, which are in testing and could be released as soon as today, according to MacRumors.
What the features do
The Hearing Test takes about five minutes. It checks how well an adult hears different pitches of sound, then shows a hearing loss classification and recommended next steps. The Hearing Aid feature makes the sounds around you louder. Apple says it is meant for adults with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss, and it costs nothing extra.
Who can use it
You need AirPods Pro 2 or AirPods Pro 3 with the latest firmware, which is the small built-in software inside the earbuds. They must be paired with an iPhone or iPad running iOS 27.2 or iPadOS 27.2 or later. The features are still unavailable in other provinces.
What is not known yet
Ontario is reportedly about to change a law that would clear the way for a launch there. No date has been given, and nothing was said about other provinces. The features first launched in the U.S. and select other countries in October 2024. A separate Hearing Protection feature was already available in Canada.
The takeawayIf you own AirPods Pro 2 or 3 and live in one of the five provinces, install iOS 27.2 when it arrives to try the hearing test.
