If you do most of your computing at a desk, a Mac mini may get you more computer for the money than a MacBook. Engadget makes that case. The mini starts at $899 with Apple's M6 chip and 16GB of memory. That is a stronger machine than the $699 MacBook Neo or the $1,299 MacBook Air, according to the outlet.
What the Mac mini is
The Mac mini is Apple's smallest desktop. It has no screen, and no keyboard or mouse comes in the box. The idea is sometimes summed up as BYODKM, or bring your own display, keyboard and mouse. You plug in the gear you already have and skip paying for it twice.
Why it can be faster
The MacBook Neo, at $699, uses the iPhone's A18 Pro chip and has 8GB of memory. That works for many people, Engadget says, but it may fall short for video editing or other heavy tasks. The mini's base model has 16GB. Engadget says that is plenty for demanding apps like Final Cut Pro or Xcode, which makes it a good first Mac for learning video editing or coding.
Cooling matters too. The mini has a fan, so it can hold its top speed longer. A fanless MacBook slows itself down when it gets hot to avoid overheating.
- Light tasks like web browsing and documents: little difference.
- 4K video editing, compiling code and some 3D games: the cooling helps.
- Ports: several USB-C Thunderbolt ports, plus Ethernet, HDMI and a headphone jack.
Where the savings end
The mini costs less than a MacBook Air partly because a laptop pays for a display and a battery. That only helps if you already own a monitor, keyboard and mouse. If you have to buy all three, Engadget warns the total can come close to the price of a new MacBook Air.
Who should choose what
People who work from coffee shops or travel often need a MacBook. They give up some sustained speed but can unplug and go anywhere. A laptop can also be docked at home with an external monitor, keyboard and mouse.
For everyone else, the question is simple: do you need more power or more portability? If you never take the computer out of the house, the Mac mini deserves a look before you buy a laptop.
The takeawayIf you already own a monitor, keyboard and mouse and stay at a desk, a Mac mini at $899 may beat a pricier MacBook.
