Zoho says its expense software, Zoho Expense, now uses AI to do much of the work finance teams usually do by hand. That includes reading receipts, matching card charges, checking company rules and sending low-risk claims on for reimbursement. Zoho laid this out in a blog post published October 22, 2026.
What it does
The AI is called Zia, Zoho's assistant. It reads receipts in more than 38 languages and pulls out the merchant, date, amount, currency and tax. It also sorts each expense. Zoho says a Marriott charge becomes lodging and an Uber receipt becomes transportation. A Starbucks receipt may be a meal or client entertainment, depending on past reports at that company.
- Matches card transactions to receipts using merchant, date and amount.
- Spots card expenses that were paid but never submitted.
- Groups expenses into reports by trip or project.
- Flags duplicates, missing receipts, weekend spending and excessive meal claims.
How approvals work
Claims that fit company policy can go straight to reimbursement. Exceptions and high-value reports go to the right human approver. Zoho says the AI also looks for patterns across employees and departments, such as duplicate receipts, inflated claims and excessive mileage. Those cases are sent to the finance team for a human check. Employees get feedback as they file, not at month end.
Who it is for
The pitch is aimed at businesses that reimburse staff, especially growing ones where reviewing every report slows things down. Employees can also ask Zia questions in plain language, such as what a policy allows or which receipt is missing. Finance teams can build dashboards that track violations, spending by cost center, seasonal trends and delayed reimbursements.
What is not known
The post is Zoho's own description of its product. It does not give pricing, a rollout date or which plans include these features. It also offers no accuracy figures. Zoho says the system gets better at reading receipt formats as it processes more documents, but it does not say by how much.
What to watch
Automation can save hours of receipt chasing, but it can also be wrong. Zoho itself says suspicious cases go to people for review. A business trying a tool like this should keep a person in charge of high-value claims and look closely at whatever the AI flags.
The takeawayAI can now handle much of expense paperwork, but keep a person reviewing flagged and high-value claims.
