Zalando, a top European online fashion retailer, has launched its first AI shopping agent. It is called Zalando Extended. Shoppers will be able to buy products from other online stores inside the Zalando app, with AI agents doing the work. A first pilot is running with home goods retailer Westwing.

What it is

The move fits a trend called agentic commerce. That means AI agents handle the whole buying process for a person, from comparing prices across retailers to paying. Zalando sells clothes, shoes and accessories from thousands of brands, including Nike, Hugo Boss and Coach. Extended widens what shoppers can buy through its app.

The business backdrop

The launch came with third-quarter results. Revenue rose 5.1% to €3.17 billion, above the €3.15 billion analysts expected. The gross profit margin was 38.7%, below expectations. Analysts at Jefferies and JPMorgan linked the miss partly to investments. Shares fell 5% in early trading.

JPMorgan pointed to ongoing risk from agentic commerce. Zalando's finance chief said the company is shifting toward a platform model, with B2B revenue up almost 28%.

What is not known yet

  • Whether Extended costs shoppers anything
  • When it will reach all Zalando customers
  • Which other stores will join after Westwing
  • How shoppers will approve each purchase
