If you open YouTube on your phone and tap the fourth button at the bottom out of habit, it will not be there. YouTube is removing the Subscriptions tab from the bottom bar in its Android and iOS apps. It now lives at the top of the Home screen. The change comes with a new feature called custom feeds.
What changed
Subscriptions had a spot in the bottom bar for nearly a decade, since 2017. Now it appears as "Subs" in the top bar of the Home tab, right after "Home," with a red underline. YouTube says this is the start of a series of updates meant to make Home feel more seamless. The redesign began testing earlier this year.
After Subs, the top bar shows new feeds for Live, Music, and Movies & TV. The Movies & TV feed only shows up if you have active subscriptions, such as Primetime Channels. The redesign also removes YouTube's navigation drawer, the side menu that slides out.
Custom feeds
Custom feeds let you describe what you want to see in your own words. Tap the "+" at the top of your Home feed and type a topic, channels, or a mood. One example from YouTube: "help me unwind after work with guided meditations under 10 minutes." You then get a feed built around that request.
Saved feeds show up as tabs after Home and Subs, so you can return to them later. Each feed has a prompt box at the top that lets you change it. Custom feeds also work on the web and sync with your phone.
Limits and availability
- Free users can save up to 3 active custom feeds.
- YouTube Premium members, who pay for the service, can save up to 8.
- The rollout starts on mobile and desktop, in English, for signed-in viewers in the U.S.
YouTube says custom feeds will reach more countries later. The material does not say when, or which countries come first.
What to do
Look at the top of Home when you want your subscriptions. Some people will miss the old spot. One reader comment on the original report said the removed button was the only one they actually used. If you are in the U.S., you can also try a custom feed for a mood or topic you return to often.
The takeawaySubscriptions has moved to the top of YouTube's Home screen on phones, so look there instead of the bottom bar.
