If your AirPods seem to run out of power faster than they used to, a few small habits may help. Apple does not publish an official date for when AirPods wear out. Some estimates say that with good care, the battery should last about two to three years before its capacity is affected.

How long a charge lasts

Battery life depends on the model. The entry-level AirPods 5 last up to four hours per charge with Active Noise Cancellation on. With the charging case, the total reaches up to 20 hours. The wireless charging case adds one extra hour in the earbuds and two in the case.

The AirPods Pro 3 go further: up to eight hours per charge and up to 24 hours with the case. That makes them a better fit for long calls or long flights. The AirPods Max 2 headphones last up to 20 hours on a single charge.

Charging basics

Most AirPods charge only when they sit in their case, with no buttons to press. The case charges through a wired USB-C or Lightning cable, depending on the model. Some cases also work with MagSafe or Qi wireless chargers, and even an Apple Watch charger. The AirPods Max charge directly. AirPods 4 and newer models do not come with a charging cable.

In a hurry, five minutes in the case gives the earbuds about one extra hour of listening. This works for both the AirPods 5 and the Pro 3.

Habits that protect the battery

The latest AirPods have a feature called Optimized Battery Charging. It learns your daily routine and waits for the right moment to finish charging, often overnight. This cuts down on wear. It is usually on by default, but you can check it on a connected iPhone.

  • Open Settings, then AirPods, then Battery to confirm Optimized Battery Charging is on.
  • Avoid leaving AirPods on a wireless charger all night. They tend to run hotter there, which can shorten battery life.
  • Turn on Charging Notifications in the same menu for alerts when the battery is low and when it is full.

The reminders can be set up on both your iPhone and your Apple Watch.

What is not known

There is no official data on when AirPods stop working, so the two to three year figure is only an estimate. Your results will vary with the model you own and how you charge it. The tips above are about slowing wear, not stopping it.

The takeaway

Check that Optimized Battery Charging is on, and skip all-night wireless charging, to help your AirPods last longer.
