Xero, the online accounting software, now connects to Google's Gemini chat assistant. Business owners can type a question in plain language and get answers from their live Xero books. Ask for a profit and loss report, a list of overdue balances or your cash position, and Gemini pulls the figures and can draw a chart.
What you can ask
According to the announcement, the connection supports everyday money questions. Owners can generate Profit & Loss statements, find overdue balances, draft invoice summaries and check overall financial health. It also covers sales and receivables (money owed to you) and purchases and payables (money you owe).
- Profit and loss reports
- Overdue balances and aged receivables
- Invoice summaries
- Cash position and overall financial health
Charts inside the chat
Gemini can turn the live Xero numbers into interactive visual reports without leaving the chat. One example is a graph of net profit or loss. For people who find spreadsheets hard to read, that may make it quicker to see where the business stands.
Xero says accountants and bookkeepers are covered too. Anurag Agrawal of the research firm Techaisle said they can ask Gemini for a client's profit and loss, aged receivables or cash position and get the answer, charted, from live Xero data.
Safeguards and limits
Anything that changes your financial records needs your sign-off. Issuing an invoice or sending a payment reminder requires confirmation first. That keeps control with you, but it adds a step.
On privacy, Xero says data shared between Gemini and Xero is used only within the session and is not used to train Google's AI models.
The connected app also has a tasks feature for routine work, run on automated schedules and workflows. Xero says features are coming that combine Xero and Gmail for overdue invoice follow-ups, or that customize daily financial summaries. The article warns that automated tasks could affect cash flow management, and that users may need time and training to set them up well.
What to do
Xero users can try asking simple read-only questions first, such as who owes money. Read every draft invoice or reminder before approving it, since those go out under your business name. The announcement does not say which Xero plans or regions get the feature, what it costs, or exactly when the Gmail features arrive.
The takeawayIf you use Xero, you can now ask Gemini about your numbers, but read every invoice or reminder before you approve it.
