WhatsApp has started rolling out Communities, a feature that puts many group chats under one roof. It is not on every phone yet. The company says it will reach everyone worldwide "over the next few months." The feature was first announced in April.

What it does

A Community is a kind of super-group. It can bring together several groups and many people around one topic. WhatsApp suggests it for neighborhoods, parents at a school and workplaces. Once you have it, you can start a new Community or add existing groups to a Community you already made.

WhatsApp says Communities are protected by end-to-end encryption. That means only the people in the chat can read the messages. The company points out that Slack and Discord do not offer this.

What else is new

  • On Android, the Communities tab sits at the top. On iPhone, it sits at the bottom.
  • Groups can now hold up to 1,024 people.
  • Video calls can now host 32 people.

What is not known yet

The material does not say what Communities cost or when it will reach each country. Rollout is gradual, so some people will see it before others. If the tab is missing from your app, that is expected for now.

The takeaway

Communities can gather your team, school or neighborhood chats in one private place, but check your app, since it may not have reached you yet.
