Threads is testing a way to post to a small group instead of everyone. The feature is called Threads Friends. It lets you share a post with up to 50 friends and keep it hidden from everyone else on the platform.

How it works

Think of it as a "close friends" list. The app also calls these friends "Thriends." The test runs only in Ireland, Italy and Japan for now.

Meta will help you build the first list. A company spokesperson said Threads will suggest followers you often engage with, and you can edit the list. Once it is set, a green bubble at the top of your feed shows friends' posts shared in the last 24 hours.

People outside the test countries are not fully shut out. If a friend in one of those countries adds you to their list, you will be able to see their friends-only posts.

What is not known yet

Meta has not said if or when the test will expand, so most US users will not get it for now. Detailed images have not been shared. Laura Javier, product design director for Threads, showed a short preview of a friends-only post and a hidden surprise that changes "Threads Friends" to "Thriends."

Twitter tried something similar in 2022 called Circles, with groups of up to 150. It ended the feature about a year later. If Threads Friends reaches you, it could let you post more casually to people you trust.

The takeaway

Threads Friends is a small test for now, so nothing changes for most people unless a friend in Ireland, Italy or Japan adds them.
