Tesla shows video of its robotaxi dodging crashes with Waymo and Avride cars

Tesla released clips of its driverless taxi avoiding Waymo and Avride cars. The footage is hand-picked, so it says little about how safe the service really is.

Tesla has posted a highlight reel of its robotaxi steering clear of collisions with rival robotaxis from Waymo and Avride. The clips went up ahead of Tesla's third-quarter earnings call on Wednesday. They are part of Tesla's push to make its case on robotaxi safety.

What the video shows

Tesla's VP of AI, Ashok Elluswamy, shared the video on X and called it "Robotaxi B-roll." Other clips cover stormy weather, a pedestrian crossing at a green light and stray pets. In one rival clip, a Tesla stops in its own lane as a Waymo makes a wider-than-usual right turn and drifts into Tesla's lane. In another, a Tesla brakes at night for an Avride car that pulled in too far from the right.

Waymo is a Google sister company. Avride is a smaller firm that offers rides through Uber in Dallas and tests with a safety driver in Austin. Neither company had responded to requests for comment.

Why the clips only tell part of the story

Tesla chose these clips itself. They do not show how often close calls happen, or how often the cars handle them badly. Tesla also reported 3.3 million autonomous miles, compared with more than 271 million for Waymo as of June. Tesla began limited rides with no safety monitor in the car in Austin in January.

What happens next

Tesla said on its earnings call that it will launch unsupervised Cybercabs in Dallas in November. Independent safety data on those rides is not yet available.

The takeaway

If robotaxis reach your city, judge them on independent safety data, not on a company's best clips.
