Stripe now lets businesses send money to each other instantly through a new add-on called "stripe pay." The company announced it in a LinkedIn post on Tuesday, Oct. 27. Stripe said a sender can find another company by its Stripe profile handle and send funds for free.
How it works
The tool is available in the Stripe Dashboard, the website where businesses manage their account. It also works in CLI, a tool developers use to type commands. Both sides need the right setup. The sender must have a funded financial account. The receiver must have a financial account linked to their Stripe profile, according to a Stripe article the company linked in its post.
Why Stripe is doing this
This is an account-to-account payment, often called A2A. Money moves directly between accounts instead of through a card network. Stripe CEO Patrick Collison wrote on X that "A2A payments will be more important than P2P payments," meaning person-to-person transfers.
What is not known yet
- Whether any limits apply to how much can be sent
- Which countries and account types can use it
- How a business gets a funded financial account if it lacks one
The material shared so far does not answer these questions. Businesses already on Stripe may want to check the Stripe article before counting on it.
The takeawayIf your business uses Stripe, look into stripe pay for free instant payments, but confirm the account requirements and limits first.
