Shopify's in-store checkout software can now recognize some customers the first time they shop at a store. When a shopper taps a card to pay, the system can match it to someone who has bought from other Shopify stores. The shopper then chooses whether to share their details. The change is part of Shopify's Fall '26 Edition, its latest round of product updates.
What changed
Shopify POS is the software and hardware stores use to take payments in person. According to Vanessa Lee, Shopify's VP of product, it can now recognize more in-store customers through Shopify's network of hundreds of millions of shoppers who have checked out at stores using Shopify Payments.
If a match is found, the shopper is offered a digital receipt by email, text message or the Shop app. Choosing one of those options links the purchase to a customer profile and gives the store the shopper's contact details. Nobody has to spell out an email address at the counter.
Who it affects
Shoppers who have used Shopify stores before may see the new prompt. Choosing the Shop app means future receipts from Shopify merchants will arrive there automatically, in one place.
For store owners, the draw is knowing who is walking in. Lee says that lets a merchant personalize the experience, send marketing and give people a reason to come back. Repeat customers can be viewed across online and in-store sales. Shopify says its data shows a known in-store customer has a lifetime value more than 60% higher than one a store does not know.
Other network features
The same idea, using what Shopify learns across its stores, shows up in other tools described in the interview:
- Inbox, the chat box on a store's site, personalizes recommendations for shoppers signed in with Shop.
- Shopify Protect now shows fraud being blocked in the store admin, and can spot the same card or address used at different stores.
- AI helps merchants answer "package not delivered" disputes by formatting delivery proof for card companies.
Shopify says merchants have seen up to 1.6 times higher dispute win rates by category. Shopify also says buyers recognized by Shop convert better in Inbox chats, though it gave no figure.
What is not known yet
The material does not say when the register feature reaches stores, which countries get it, or what it costs. It also does not explain how a shopper can avoid being recognized at all. It only says shoppers can choose whether to share information and how to get a receipt. Lee also says the system works in a way that protects merchant and buyer privacy, but the details were not given.
The takeawayAt a Shopify-powered register, a tap of your card may now bring up a prompt, and sharing your details or taking a receipt is your choice.
