Shopify has released its Fall '26 Edition, a big update to the tools that developers use to build apps and store features. Three changes stand out. AI assistants can now search products and check out for shoppers. New security checks flag common app flaws. And store owners can see a partner's Shopify history before they approve access.

Shopping through AI assistants

Shopify calls this direction "agentic commerce." In plain terms, it means AI helpers that shop on a person's behalf. Developers can now connect to Shopify's product catalog, cart and checkout through one entry point called Shop.dev.

  • A tool called shop.md turns any AI agent into a personal shopping assistant.
  • Shoppers can reach over a billion products, with recommendations based on their purchase history.
  • Universal Checkout lets partners build one checkout for products from many brands.
  • New catalog filters let developers narrow results by things like price limits or product features.

Safety checks for apps

Many stores rely on third-party apps, so a weak app can put a store at risk. Shopify's AI Toolkit now includes app security checks for developers. They look for common flaws, such as unauthenticated routes, which are pages anyone can open without logging in. They also look for cross-shop data access, where one store's data could be reached from another.

Checking who you let in

When a partner asks for access to a store, the request now shows that partner's history on Shopify and whether the account looks legitimate. Store owners can review this directly in the request. The aim is to approve access with more confidence and lower the risk of letting in the wrong person.

Other upgrades

The Dev Dashboard now puts app and store health numbers, payouts and performance metrics in one place. That helps developers and merchants see how an app affects the business. A new theme setup lets developers see the whole page structure in one template file, which should make edits easier. Hydrogen, Shopify's tool for custom storefronts, now works with any runtime and framework.

What to weigh

Shopify's article notes that the more complex features may require upfront spending on developer time. Keeping up with new capabilities will also take ongoing learning. Vanessa Lee, Shopify's VP of Product, said, "Developers are part of the same flywheel as merchants." The idea is that better developer tools lead to better options for store owners. The material does not cover pricing or exact rollout timing, so the full details are on Shopify's official page.

The takeaway

Shopify store owners can now review a partner's history and account legitimacy in an access request before approving it.
