She asked ChatGPT about a $1,800 car bill and skipped a $400 add-on

A Jeep owner printed her $1,800 service quote, asked ChatGPT to review it, and skipped a $400 item. Experts say the choice depends on how you drive.

A Jeep owner says she saved $400 at the dealership by asking ChatGPT to look over her service estimate. TikTok creator Debra (@debrafduncan) posted the story. She expected a bill near $1,000 and was quoted $1,800.

What she did

Debra took her Jeep in because its soft top would not close, which she called a safety hazard. She says it was flipping open while she drove. She also booked the 80,000-mile/60-month maintenance service. She asked for a printout, stepped outside and had ChatGPT go over it. Its advice: skip the rear differential service unless you tow heavy loads, because it looked like an upsell.

What to keep in mind

The rear differential is the part that controls the speed of each rear wheel. One Jeep dealership says its fluid service is recommended every 30,000 to 60,000 miles. Experts quoted in the story warn that putting it off could cause problems later. Your Mechanic says about $400 is a fair price.

A Reddit user on a Wrangler forum said that if you are not doing anything demanding with your Jeep, the owner's manual interval is enough. That user changes fluids yearly because of regular water driving.

What is not known

The story does not say what Debra's manual recommends or when her differential was last serviced. Motor1 contacted Debra, Jeep parent company Stellantis and ChatGPT maker OpenAI for comment. No replies were reported.

The takeaway

Ask for a printed estimate and check each add-on against your owner's manual before you approve a big repair bill.
