Apple may unveil a new iPad Mini at an event on Oct. 28, and the rumors point to a better tablet with a higher price. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says the starting price could be close to $799. That would be $100 more than the current iPad Mini 7. None of this is confirmed by Apple.

What is happening

Apple is holding its "Pro and Tell" event in Los Angeles on Oct. 28 at 10 a.m. PT. Several products are expected, and the iPad Mini 8 is one rumored item. It has been two years since the iPad Mini 7 came out, so a refresh would fit the timing. As of this writing, Apple had not announced a livestream. Its recent "Welcome Home" event also had no live keynote.

The price

The $799 figure would be about $200 above the starting price the iPad Mini 7 had when it launched. Apple raised the Mini 7 price over time, for the same reasons other electronics have gotten pricier lately. So the jump from today's price would be about $100.

What the rumors say you would get

The specs come from an earlier MacRumors report, not from Apple. They could explain some of the higher price.

  • A20 Pro chip, newer than the A17 Pro in the Mini 7
  • 12GB of memory, up from 8GB, which should help speed and Apple's new AI features
  • OLED screen, replacing the LCD in the Mini 7
  • Apple N1 chip with Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 support
  • IP-rated water resistance, a first for the iPad Mini

OLED is a screen type that is widely seen as a big step up from LCD. The article says the screen alone could account for the price increase. Water resistance means a splash or a bath-time movie would be less risky, though the exact rating is not known.

A different camera spot

MacRumors also reports a new front camera placed on the side. Held upright, it would sit in the right edge of the frame instead of the top. The edges around the screen are also said to be thinner. What the camera can actually do is unclear.

What to do

If you have been waiting to buy a small iPad, the price may rise soon. The choice is between the rumored upgrades and the extra money. Waiting until Oct. 28 would show which rumors were right and what Apple actually charges.

The takeaway

The iPad Mini 8 may arrive Oct. 28 with an OLED screen and a price near $799, so wait for Apple's real details before buying.
