Queens Public Library in New York City is dealing with a ransomware attack. The library confirmed it Wednesday evening on social media and directly to patrons. Ransomware is malicious software that locks up an organization's systems while criminals demand payment to unlock them.

What is down

  • The library website
  • Computers inside the library
  • Check-out and return machines
  • Public Wi-Fi, the mobile app and digital media services

Renewals are also unavailable. Late fines are not a worry, though. Queens, Brooklyn and New York Public Library permanently ended daily late fines in October 2021. All branches remain open, including the central library in Jamaica. The library warns it will take some time before its network and systems are restored.

What to do and what is unknown

Some virtual and in-person programs may be affected. Patrons should call their local branch to check, and follow the library's social media channels for official updates.

No ransomware group has claimed the attack. The material does not say how the attackers got in or how long recovery will take. For scale, the British Library refused to pay a 20 Bitcoin demand after a 2023 attack and rebuilt its systems instead. Its recovery is still not complete.

The takeaway

If you plan to visit a Queens library branch, call ahead first, since some programs may be off and online renewals do not work.
