Google's October 2026 update teaches the Pixel Buds Pro 2 and Pixel Buds 2a to stop playing audio when you fall asleep. There is a catch: you also need to be wearing a Pixel Watch. Without one, a few manual changes before bed get you most of the way there.
What changed
When the Pixel Watch decides you have dozed off, it tells the earbuds to stop the audio and lock down touch interactions. To get the feature, open the Pixel Buds app, go to More settings and check the Firmware update screen. The sleep auto-pause arrives with firmware 6.144.
Who it affects
Anyone who falls asleep with earbuds in, on a plane or on the couch, knows the morning routine: a lost bud, a drained battery, or a podcast that kept talking for hours. Owners of a Pixel Buds Pro 2 or Pixel Buds 2a with a Pixel Watch get the automatic fix. Everyone else has to do it by hand.
Five settings to change
- Set a sleep timer. Spotify, YouTube Music and most podcast apps have one built in.
- Turn off Touch controls so a pillow cannot skip tracks or crank the volume.
- Pick a noise control mode that fits where you sleep.
- Switch off Spoken notifications so Gemini does not read messages aloud.
- Put the buds in their case when you wake up.
The Android Clock app can also set a sleep schedule and play soothing sounds. Digital Wellbeing's Bedtime mode silences alerts and turns the screen grayscale.
Why each one matters
A pillow pressing on an earbud can read as a finger tap. That can skip tracks, wake the voice assistant or push the volume all the way up. Touch controls live under Connected Devices, behind the gear icon next to your buds. Turn them back on in the morning.
Noise control depends on the setting. Active Noise Cancellation helps on a loud plane. At home, leaving it off means you can still hear a smoke alarm. Both it and Transparency mode cost battery. Google rates the Pixel Buds Pro 2 at up to 8 hours with noise cancellation on and 12 with it off. The Pixel Buds 2a get 7 hours versus 10.
Pixel Buds now run Gemini, which can read incoming messages from apps like Google Messages, WhatsApp and Instagram. Do Not Disturb on the phone may not stop it, since apps can be allowed to override that mode. The Spoken notifications setting, found in the digital assistant settings, is all or nothing.
Battery in the morning
Even with playback paused, the buds still use a little power to stay connected to your phone. Five minutes in the case gives the Pixel Buds Pro 2 up to 1.5 hours of listening with noise cancellation off. The Pixel Buds 2a get one hour with it on.
The takeawayWithout a Pixel Watch, set a sleep timer, turn off touch controls and spoken notifications, and put the buds in the case each morning.
