Perplexity has updated Perplexity Computer so it can run fully on a Mac. The AI model, the planning and the file handling all happen on the device. The company says it can complete tasks without sending personal data to the cloud.
What it does
The local version runs on Qwen 3.6 or PPLX Pro, which is Perplexity's own retrained version of Qwen. It works inside the Perplexity app for Mac on supported Apple silicon Macs. Perplexity says it can work across Notes, Messages, Mail, Keynote and Numbers. Code and tools run in isolated sandboxes.
What your Mac needs
- Perplexity recommends 36GB of memory or more for fully local use.
- Perplexity highlights the new Mac mini machines.
- Macs with 24GB can use Hybrid Compute, which mixes cloud and local models.
If a task needs current information, web browsing or cloud-connected apps, you can allow cloud access and choose when to spend credits. You can also call on one of more than 15 frontier models for harder problems.
What is not clear
The material does not say what the update costs, how many credits a task uses, or exactly which Macs are supported beyond Apple silicon. It also does not say how well the local model performs compared with cloud models. Anyone with an older or lower-memory Mac should check the specifics before expecting the full local setup to work.
The takeawayIf keeping emails and documents off the cloud matters to you, check whether your Mac has the 36GB of memory Perplexity recommends.
