OpenAI could be ready to go public in 2027, according to its president. Greg Brockman, a co-founder, was asked at a Wall Street Journal tech conference whether the company could be IPO ready next year. He answered, "I think so. Yes." An IPO is when a company first sells shares to the public on the stock market.

What he said

Brockman said OpenAI has been clear this year that it wants to go public when the time feels right. He added that he feels "extremely good about the business" and has "never felt more confident." That is a notable tone after what he described as a bumpy start to the year.

What changed

Brockman called the first and second quarters of 2026 "pretty rough." He admitted OpenAI "wasn't even in the conversation" on agentic coding, where AI does programming tasks on its own. Rival Anthropic's Claude Code gained ground there. "We had Codex, but no one was talking about it," he said.

Then the third quarter picked up. OpenAI's annualized revenue grew 70% over the quarter. Annualized means the yearly total if the current pace held. Brockman credited business customers doubling, and said it reflected investments made earlier, not a one-quarter event.

  • Most of OpenAI's revenue now comes from businesses, up from about 30% before.
  • Consumer revenue has not shrunk. Brockman said it is still growing.
  • He pointed to a recent partnership with J.P. Morgan Chase as an example of the deals it is winning.

Who it affects

If you use or buy AI tools for work, OpenAI is clearly chasing customers like you. Brockman said a year ago people saw OpenAI as a consumer company and asked if it was committed to business clients. He said its job now is to help companies pick key goals, build trust and prove it is a reliable long-term partner.

What is not known yet

Brockman did not give a date or share dollar figures in the material available. Going public in 2027 is something he thinks is possible, not a firm plan. Any move would depend on what he called the right time for the company.

The takeaway

OpenAI says it could be ready to go public in 2027, and its push to win business customers is the main reason it feels confident.
