OpenAI and Google have struck a deal that few people saw coming. OpenAI's top AI models, including the GPT-6 series, and its Codex coding tools are coming to Google Cloud's Model Garden. That is the section of Google's cloud where business customers pick the AI models they want to use. The deal is aimed at companies and developers, not people who use ChatGPT or Gemini at home.
What changed
Three models have started rolling out in private preview to select enterprise customers: GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna. More models are set to follow, but no date has been announced. OpenAI's models are also planned for Google Antigravity and the Gemini Agent.
- Astra handles complex work such as coding, computer use, professional tasks and scientific research.
- Sol is close to Astra in intelligence and covers similar tasks.
- Luna is the cheaper option, built for everyday work tasks at scale.
Why it matters for business
Model Garden already holds more than 200 AI models from Google, outside companies and open projects. OpenAI's models will sit beside them. A business already on Google Cloud could compare models, pick the best one for each job and build workflows that mix OpenAI and Google tools, without leaving the platform.
OpenAI also stressed control. In its blog post, the company said that for regulated industries, "deploying AI requires control over who can access sensitive data and how it is used." It says the models will be paired with Google Cloud's access controls and data governance.
The bigger picture
This is not OpenAI's first move beyond one cloud. Its models and Codex tools reached Amazon Bedrock earlier this year, and Microsoft remains OpenAI's primary cloud partner. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said the goal is to give customers a broad selection of models so they can choose the right one for any given job.
What is not known yet
Everyday ChatGPT and Gemini users have not been mentioned in the deal, so nothing changes for them now. Pricing, the full list of models and the date for wider availability have not been shared. For now, access is limited to select business customers in private preview.
The takeawayIf your business uses Google Cloud, watch for wider access to OpenAI models there. Everyday ChatGPT and Gemini users see no change yet.
